The Work We Are Passionate About
Our team has the opportunity to participate in a wide range of oral and maxillofacial procedures, including:
Corrective Jaw Surgery
Corrective jaw surgery can improve a patient’s bite, facial balance, chewing, speaking, and breathing. These cases require careful planning, precise surgical support, and close coordination throughout the patient’s treatment journey.
Sleep Surgery
Sleep surgery focuses on improving the airway and helping patients breathe and sleep more effectively. This work brings together facial anatomy, airway health, anesthesia, and long-term patient care. Helping a patient sleep better can have a meaningful impact on their energy, health, and overall quality of life.
All-on-X Procedures
All-on-X treatment uses dental implants to support a fixed, full-arch restoration. These highly coordinated cases may involve extractions, implant placement, bone grafting, digital planning, restorative dentistry, and laboratory collaboration.
Dental Implants and Wisdom Teeth
Assistants learn about implant systems, bone grafting materials, sterile technique, digital workflows, and accurate surgical documentation. During wisdom teeth removal, a reassuring voice, clear explanation, and compassionate presence can shape how a young patient feels about healthcare for years to come.
What Oral Surgery Assistants Do
Depending on training, experience, and state regulations, responsibilities may include preparing surgical rooms, instruments, medications, and equipment; reviewing medical histories and recording vital signs; helping patients feel comfortable before surgery; assisting with extractions, implants, bone grafting, corrective jaw surgery, sleep surgery, and full-arch procedures; maintaining a clear surgical field; supporting anesthesia recovery; providing postoperative instructions; sterilizing instruments; managing supplies and emergency equipment; and documenting procedure details accurately and thoroughly.
The role combines clinical skill, organization, communication, teamwork, and patient advocacy.
What the Work Environment Is Like
Oral surgery is more medically and surgically intensive than many dental settings. Team members work around surgical instruments, needles, blood, medications, oxygen equipment, IV supplies, and patients receiving sedation or anesthesia. The pace can change quickly, so strong assistants learn to stay calm, follow protocols, communicate clearly, and anticipate what the surgeon, patient, and team may need next.

Successful oral surgery assistants are compassionate and reassuring, calm under pressure, reliable and punctual, detail-oriented and organized, comfortable with surgery, blood, and needles, willing to learn and receive feedback, committed to patient safety, strong communicators, team-oriented, and professional during stressful situations. Technical skills can be taught; character, work ethic, accountability, and a genuine desire to care for others are equally important.
Training and Growth
Some candidates come to oral surgery with previous dental assisting experience; others enter with strong potential and receive additional training on the job. Helpful qualifications may include dental assisting education, CPR or Basic Life Support certification, radiography credentials, infection-control training, anesthesia-assisting education, emergency-response training, and knowledge of dental or medical terminology. With experience, assistants may grow into lead surgical assistant, implant coordinator, anesthesia coordinator, clinical trainer, surgical treatment coordinator, inventory coordinator, or practice leadership roles.
